Everything you need to buy pearls with confidence

Written by the family that has graded pearls in Hyderabad since 1905. Ten minutes here and you will read a pearl label better than most jewellers.

The five pearl types we sell

All are genuine cultured pearls, grown inside a living mollusc. They differ in the water they grow in, their size, their colours and their price.

How Mangatrai grades pearls

Six things decide a pearl’s quality and price. We check all six by hand, under daylight, before a strand is strung.

CriterionWhat we look forWhy it matters
LustreHow sharply the pearl reflects light. High-lustre pearls show a mirror-like reflection; softer lustre shows a diffused glow. The single biggest driver of beauty and value.
SurfacePits, spots and ridges. Clean, smooth surfaces grade higher; small natural marks add character without hurting durability.Fewer blemishes, higher grade.
NacreThe thickness of the pearly layer. Thicker nacre means deeper lustre and a pearl that lasts for generations.Thin nacre wears through; thick nacre is an heirloom.
ShapeRound, near-round, oval, button, drop, baroque.Round is rarest and priciest. Baroque is the most affordable and the most individual.
SizeMeasured in millimetres across the pearl. Each millimetre up is exponentially rarer and more valuable.
Colour & matchBody colour, overtone, and how evenly the pearls in a strand match each other.A well-matched strand takes hundreds of pearls to assemble.
